Elsewhere Browser

A home for everything you’re doing. A doorway to everything you’re missing.

Elsewhere Browser is a standalone, Chromium-based browser that sets out to make working and discovering on the internet more thoughtful — and more delightful.

The browser is the room where most of our working lives now happen, and its basic shape has barely changed in twenty years. Tabs pile up. Projects scatter across windows, bookmarks, and notes apps. Coming back to something after a week means reconstructing it from memory.

Meanwhile the wider internet — the strange, generous, handmade one — gets harder to find behind the same few feeds. We think there’s room for a browser with a point of view: one that helps you hold on to what you’re doing, and opens a few good doors to things you’d never think to look for.

Focus

Put it down. Pick it up. Nothing lost.

A Capsule is a persistent home for a project — a kitchen renovation, a thesis, a trip, a side project that runs for months. It keeps that project’s tabs, the pages worth saving, and the small notes you’d otherwise lose. Let a Capsule rest and it gets out of your way entirely. Come back and it’s exactly as you left it, with a gentle reminder of where you were.

Capsules

Welcome back. Last here Tuesday. You were comparing glaze samples and halfway through the cabinet guide.

Try it: switch Capsules, close or open tabs, save a page, jot a note, or let a Capsule rest and bring it back.

Wander

Three doors at a time. You choose how far.

Wander shows three destinations at a time — sites made by people who cared — balanced across topics, with one deliberately outside whatever you asked for. You set how far afield to go. Every pick explains itself. And when you’ve opened enough doors, it suggests you walk through one.

How far afield?
Lean toward (optional)

One door stays a wildcard, whatever you choose.

Why these three?
  • Picked from a small, hand-chosen list.
  • Weighted by the distance you set, varied by topic.
  • One door always sits outside your lean, so you don’t just get more of the same.
  • Nothing you click here is recorded.

Three doors.

Round 1

  • Sound · Places

    Radio Garden

Spin a globe and tune into live radio stations from almost anywhere on Earth.

Why this: A well-loved classic, picked to keep this round varied. The quickest way to hear a city you’ve never been to.

Visit Radio Garden (opens in a new tab) ↗
  • Science · Art & design

    Bartosz Ciechanowski

Painstaking interactive explainers of how watches, cameras, and GPS actually work.

Why this: A lesser-known gem, picked to keep this round varied. Some of the most generous teaching on the internet.

Visit Bartosz Ciechanowski (opens in a new tab) ↗
  • WildcardPlaces · History

    TESSA — LA Public Library

The LA Public Library’s digital collections, including a century of photographs of the city.

Why this: Wildcard — chosen from outside what you asked for, on purpose. Your neighbourhood, a hundred years ago.

Each round has an end.

Try it: set how far afield to go, lean toward a few subjects, and open three new doors. The destinations are real sites, hand-picked for this preview.

What Wander won’t do

  • No infinite scroll

Three at a time. A round has an end, on purpose.

  • No hidden levers

Every destination says why it’s there. You hold the dial.

  • No engagement games

Nothing is tuned to keep you scrolling or coming back.

  • No echo chamber

One door is always a wildcard, chosen outside your lean.

The technical ambition

A real browser, built from the engine up.

Elsewhere is a true, independent browser built on Chromium — starting with macOS on Apple silicon. It’s a native Mac application with Capsules and Wander built into the browser itself, not bolted on top. Extensions, Electron wrappers, and web apps can’t reach that deep.

That’s a serious undertaking, and we’re approaching it honestly. Elsewhere keeps its changes to Chromium small, so Chromium’s security fixes can reach it quickly, and everything it keeps about you stays on your Mac. The first experimental build is with friends and family now. Plenty is still rough or unbuilt, which makes it a good time to get involved.

Try the experiment

An early build, for friends and family.

The experiment runs on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 13 Ventura or later. It has Capsules, a Library for saved pages and notes, Wander, and a command palette. It’s signed and notarized by Apple and updates itself.

Expect rough edges. Tell Garrett what works and what doesn’t at [email protected].

We’re looking for people who want to explore, sketch, and prototype a better browser together — in person in Los Angeles when we can. No résumé required. Bring ideas and a point of view.

  • Designers

Interaction, visual, type, and motion — people with strong opinions about how software should feel.

  • Engineers

C++, Chromium, Swift and macOS, systems and performance — or the appetite to learn them properly.

  • Browser specialists

Anyone who’s worked on an engine, a fork, an extension platform, or the standards behind them.

  • Creators & curators

Writers, curators, and internet explorers who could help shape what Wander shows — and why.
